For the Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon administration, energy efficiency has been a top priority for over 20 years. In 2001, the CEGEP initiated a major investment project comprising many energy-saving measures, including upgrading the heating system.
The 58,000-m2 building can accommodate 3,200 students. It had a dual-energy heating system consisting of an electric furnace and two oversized natural gas furnaces that did not meet current fuel efficiency standards.
When it learned that Hydro-Québec was abolishing the dual-energy rate (Rate BT), the administration had to decide which source of energy it would prioritize. At that point, it turned to a consulting firm that, after analysis, recommended terminating its Rate BT service contract, signing up for Rate M and using its electric furnace in off-peak hours only. A resized furnace therefore needed to be hooked up, along with equipment to control power demand. But how could they be sure that the project would be cost-effective? By signing up for Visilec. The data was conclusive and the CEGEP went ahead with the project.
By opting for Visilec, the Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon does it right! The last three years’ worth of electricity-use data for its Rate M and BT service contracts was analyzed and compared. The results confirmed the desk studies done by the consulting firm, and the CEGEP decided to go ahead with the project.
Although the project demanded an investment of $65,000, the Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon has achieved substantial savings by using its electric furnace in off-peak hours. The consulting firm estimated that 2,800 MWh were needed for off-peak heating, amounting to 40% of the CEGEP’s annual consumption when it was paying Rate BT.
Visilec confirmed the estimated energy-saving potential, so the CEGEP made the decision to go ahead with its project with greater certainty. It also planned to retrofit the gas furnaces and replace one of them. With Visilec, you can calculate capacity properly and invest accordingly.
