Image: Efficient Products - Lighting or Motors: Install Them and Save!

Whether you're a merchant, restaurant proprietor, garage operator, beauty salon owner, florist or veterinarian, the Efficient Products Program is sure to have the right product for you.
  • With a longer service life than conventional products, efficient products use less energy year after year.
The bottom line is a lower electricity bill!
  • Replace your conventional equipment today and Hydro-Québec will give you a rebate for every efficient product you buy from a participating dealer or master electrician.
  • Image: Expert advice - Exit signs equipped with incandescent bulbs consume a great deal of electricity, while LED exit signs can generate energy savings of up to 90%.

    Image: School example School
Let's say you replace 150 T-12 fluorescent fixtures, each with dual 34-W lamps and magnetic ballasts, by
T-8 fixtures with 32-W lamps and electronic ballasts. If the lights are on from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 200 days a year, your school will use 17% less energy, for average annual savings of $291.60, on top of the $2,250 in rebates offered on the purchase of the 150 T-8 fixtures. Plus, T-8s give off less heat and have a better color-rendering index (80)—two big advantages.

    Retail business
As the owner of a retail business, you replace two hundred and fifty-five 400-W conventional metal halide lamps that are on 70 hours a week with 360-W efficient metal halide lamps. You'll use 10% less energy, for average annual savings of $3,341.52. You'll also receive a $1,275 rebate on the purchase of the 255 efficient metal halide lamps, which last up to six years, provide better light that is better distributed, and give off less heat.

    Image: Hotel example Hotel
You're in charge of the hotel's energy efficiency program, and replace one hundred and seventy-five 60-W incandescent bulbs that are on 24 hours a day with the same number of 15-W screw-in compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). That's an opportunity to achieve substantial savings. Since CFLs typically use only a quarter of the electricity that incandescent lamps need to produce the same amount of light, you can save $6,208.65 a year, in addition to the $700 rebate from Hydro-Québec on the purchase of the 175 screw-in CFLs. Those savings reduce the payback period to only two years. Even better, CFLs last five to ten times longer than ordinary incandescent bulbs.

    Convenience stores
Let's say you have a convenience store that's open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight and that uses 25 light fixtures, each equipped with two 34-W T-12 fluorescent lamps with magnetic ballasts. If you were to use 32-W T 8 fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, you would use 17% less electricity. That's $177 in your pocket each year.

    Image: Merchant example Merchants
During the first year of use, an electric motor can consume up to four times its purchase price in electricity. For example, you can buy a 10-hp motor for around $1,000, but it will cost you nearly $2,200 in electricity each year. A NEMA PremiumTM three-phase 10-hp motor costs approximately $155 more, but comes with a $90 rebate. What's more, you'll save about $49 for every 4,000 hours of use. If you run your motor all year long, you can expect to save $107 a year in energy costs.

    Fruit stores
The owner of a fruit store installed a 250-W mercury vapor light fixture behind his building to increase security. If he had installed a 100-W high-pressure sodium (HPS) light fixture instead, he would be saving $122 a year.

Image: Small service company example Small service companies
Clients of small service companies are often sensitive to the ambience in reception areas and meeting rooms. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are an ideal solution in such situations. They provide soft, pleasant lighting, they consume only a quarter of the energy of incandescent lamps on average, and they last five to ten times longer.
