Gentilly-2 Nuclear Generating Station

Low Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Nuclear energy produces minimal amounts of greenhouse gases. With climate change now of global concern, reducing greenhouse gas emissions from all sources is crucial and Gentilly-2 generating station is doing its part.

Hydro-Québec is Canada's largest power generator and one of the world's largest producers of clean and renewable energy. Thanks to its focus on hydraulic power generation (98%) and its one nuclear generating station, Québec has the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Canada. Québec generates 30% of the electricity in the country but only 1.5% of the greenhouse gases produced by Canadian electric utilities.

The power industry is responsible for only 2.7% of Québec’s greenhouse gas emissions, compared with 17% in Ontario and 22.5% in Alberta. In the United States, that figure is 34%.
