Cascades emphasizes energy efficiency

Paper manufacturing and recycling require an enormous amount of energy. To reduce its electricity consumption and energy bill, Cascades signed up for two of Hydro-Québec's programs for major customers: the Industrial Analysis and Demonstration Program and the Industrial Initiatives Program.

An original solution

Energy analyses carried out at several Cascades mills with financial assistance from Hydro-Québec identified several industrial processes where electricity consumption could be reduced.

Cascades submitted a very innovative project: the use of a temporary variable-frequency drive (VFD) for the screens used for fibre classification. With the VFD, the optimal operating speed of the screens to obtain the fibre's desired properties can be determined. The result is energy savings and sound equipment investments.

Cascades has also submitted other projects under the Industrial Initiatives Program, such as the installation of VFDs on various motors, pumps, fans and production units. A VFD modulates the equipment's operating speed according to requirements.

Cascades becomes energy wise

Cascades takes resource conservation and energy efficiency to heart. It has adopted an energy policy and set up an Energy Action Group made up of nine engineers, whose mission is to actively seek ways to help its Quebec mills to achieve substantial energy savings.
