As part of the Éléonore project, Opinaca Mines is currently prospecting on the northeast side of Opinaca reservoir.

At the promoter's request, Hydro-Québec conducted draft-design studies for the following:

  • Temporary 69-kV service for the prospecting camp (phase 1);
  • 120-kV service for the mining operations, starting in 2011 (phase 2).

The ideal solution in this context would be to build a 63.5-km line that could initially be operated at 69 kV and subsequently converted to 120 kV. Using the same line instead of building a second permanent line will substantially reduce the environmental impacts of the project.

Construction started in October 2009. Commissioning of 69-kV service is planned for 2010, followed by commissioning of 120-kV service in 2011 if the mining project goes ahead.

The estimated cost of the project is $29.7 million.
