Whether you’re a homeowner or a tenant, you’ll appreciate our energy-saving tips to help you save electricity and money when you move!

A move is a great time to adopt new energy-saving habits, like installing electronic thermostats, pluging air leaks and replacing household appliances with new, more energy-efficient models. Also, before you move, it’s always a good idea to estimate your new home’s consumption.

BEFORE you move in

  • Estimate your new home’s consumption, compare its average consumption with that of equivalent homes and make wiser energy choices.
  • Install electronic thermostats and save up to 10% on your heating costs.
  • Find and plug air leaks. You may be losing up to 25% of your home’s heat.
  • If you change your windows, choose ENERGY STAR® certified options to save up to 10% on your annual heating costs.
  • Repair leaky faucets. Water heating makes up an important share of your electricity bill.
  • If you purchase new appliances or electrical or electronic equipment, look for ENERGY STAR® certified models. They are the most efficient options in their categories in terms of energy performance.
  • Ask yourself if you really need a second refrigerator or freezer. An older generation refrigerator can consume up to 4.8 times more energy than a new model. Several organizations provide refrigerator and freezer recycling services.
