1. What's the difference between an ENERGY STAR qualified product and a conventional one?
Comparison of main components
ENERGY STAR qualified product Conventional product
Double or triple glazing with low-emissivity ("low-e") glass Double glazing with regular glass
Inert gas such as argon or krypton in the sealed unit Air in the sealed unit
Low-conductivity or warm-edge spacers Aluminum spacers
2. Does an ENERGY STAR qualified window or patio door cost more?
ENERGY STAR qualified products don't necessarily cost more than conventional products. When they do, the money you save on heating should quickly cover the extra cost. In addition, your ENERGY STAR qualified windows and patio doors can help increase the resale value of your home.
3. Can I make a better purchasing decision based on climate zones?
When you buy ENERGY STAR windows or patio doors that are qualified for the zone you live in, you know you're getting a highly energy-efficient product. If the product is qualified for a colder zone, you'll save even more on heating.
4. I'm buying a new home. What should I be looking for?
Because new homes often have a large floor area and many large windows, owners have a lot to gain by selecting the most energy-efficient products available. If you're having a house built, ask the builder to put in ENERGY STAR qualified windows and patio doors.
5. What about installation?
To maximize your energy savings, have your new purchases installed by a professional. An experienced installer will be able to minimize heat loss and air infiltration around the frames. Most window retailers offer installation services.
6. What should I do with my old windows and patio doors?
Hydro-Québec encourages you to dispose of old windows and patio doors and waste responsibly. To learn more about recycling, contact your municipality or your regional county municipality.

Recyc-Québec can also offer guidance. To get in touch with Recyc-Québec, call 514 351-7835 (in Montréal) or 1 800 807-0678 (elsewhere in Québec).
