Be careful! Are there any power lines nearby? To keep everyone safe and to protect the tree, you need to ensure a minimum clearance, specific to each species, that takes into account

  • the span and height of the fully mature tree;
  • a safety margin;
  • risk factors such as vulnerability to wind or ice damage.

How do you calculate the right planting clearance?

Our online tool "Clearance-Tree-Electricity", shows you the right planting clearance for each type
of tree.

Measuring clearance

  1. Lay a rope on the ground under and parallel to the power lines.
  2. Lay down a second rope at a right angle to the first rope, so that it crosses the spot where you want to plant your tree.
  3. On the second rope, mark the clearance determined by the online tool for the type of tree you want to plant.
  4. Plant your tree beyond this clearance point.

Before you plant, you have to dig!

Be careful! Do you know what's underground at different depths?

Never dig or authorize any excavation on your property, no matter how small, without calling Info-Excavation to check the location of underground wires. Ask first!

Do your trees need pruning?

Pruning can be a dangerous activity, especially if the branches are close to power lines. Neither you nor your tools should get within three metres of a medium-voltage power line.
