Electrical Safety

Tips and advice from Mr. Socket

Renovations on the horizon?

If you're going to be using power tools, play it safe and follow the rules.

Don't overload
outlets

Too many devices plugged into the same outlet can cause a fire. Don't take the risk.

  • Plug your various tools into different outlets.
  • Unplug the ones you're not using.
  • Use a power bar with overload protection.
Be alert when working with electricity

Prevent accidents and make sure to unplug:

  • The table saw before you move it.
  • All electrical tools before you take a break.
  • Any electrical device before you try to fix it.
Use extension cords in good condition
  • Be sure the cord isn't frayed and avoid letting the plug come into contact with water.
  • Buy a three-prong model.
  • Push the plug all the way in.
  • Never bend or cut off the third prong; it's the ground, a very important safety feature.
Leave tree trimming to the pros

Are broken branches touching a power line? Are branches growing too close to them? Don't get within three metres of overhead lines. Tree trimming is a job for professionals.
