Like some hundred power utilities around the world, Hydro-Québec has chosen to adopt current industry-standard technology, rather than to continue with outdated technology.
Hydro-Québec has decided to implement an advanced metering infrastructure, which automatically transmits electricity consumption data. We will no longer have to read your meter on site and your bill will be based on actual consumption, not on estimates. In addition, when you move, you will no longer have to fill in a meter-reading card and electrical service can be connected remotely–another advantage for you!
The advanced metering infrastructure is a proven solution, allowing us to deploy an evolvable technological platform. A wireless network and various telecommunication devices will transmit data from your meter to our billing system. Data will be protected through encryption.
The meter has a small digital LCD screen allowing you to view your consumption, just like you do now. It shows the cumulative total number of kilowatthours (kWh) consumed, the way a car’s odometer shows kilometres driven. It is regulation- compliant and exceeds Measurement Canada’s precision standards.
We began installing some 25,000 meters in June 2011. This initial phase is taking place in three locations: Boucherville's industrial park, the regional county municipality of Memphrémagog, a widespread rural area, and the Villeray neighborhood of Montréal.
Once the Régie de l’énergie [Québec energy board] has issued its approval, the province-wide rollout will begin in summer 2012 and run until 2017.
Once the rollout has reached your area, we will send you a letter or leave you a voice message to let you know that an installer will be visiting shortly to replace your meter.
Meter installation takes 10 to 30 minutes and requires only a brief service interruption. If you are out and your meter is accessible, the installer will proceed with the replacement and leave a notice to that effect on the door, along with a pamphlet. However, if you are out and your meter is not accessible, the installer will leave a number you can call to set up an appointment.
