Geothermal energy

Geothermal energy: a very interesting option.

For the past four years, Antonio Marra, his wife Cinzia and their daughter Laura have been using a geothermal system in their split-level home in Laval.

In 2006, the electric heating system the Marra family was using needed replacement. After learning about the funding offered for geothermal energy, Mr. Marra asked a few specialized contractors for quotes.

The chosen contractor spent three days drilling the well and five installing and calibrating the system.

"The contractor was accredited by the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition and I really appreciated how competent, professional and honest he was," explains Mr. Marra.

The Marra family benefited from grants of close to $6,000 from Hydro-Québec and Natural Resources Canada, and spent $19,000 for the installation.

"I see this as a sustainable investment," says Mr. Marra. "After four years, I notice that our electricity bill has decreased by about 40% and our heating and air-conditioning costs are down 50%. Also, since the new system is more powerful, our family is more comfortable."
