Protect your electronic
devices against voltage
fluctuations

Have you noticed your lights flickering?
Has your microwave stopped displaying the time?

It’s probably due to voltage fluctuations, or waveform distortions. They can be caused by outdoor phenomena, such as storms, or by factors within your home.

Certain devices with electronic components such as DVD players, televisions and computers are especially sensitive to fluctuations in voltage and must therefore be protected.

As an electricity provider, Hydro-Québec must meet the standards set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC) and rigorously maintain its network. It is nevertheless possible that the network may experience technical failures that could cause voltage fluctuations. However, did you know that protecting your electronic devices is your responsibility?

Here’s how to protect your devices:

  1. 1Have your electrical installation and grounding system inspected by a master electrician.
  2. 2Plug all sensitive devices into a CSA- or ULC-approved power bar with surge protection.
  3. 3Try not to plug your devices into the same circuit as a motor-powered appliance such as a dishwasher or refrigerator.
  4. 4When there’s a storm or scheduled interruption, unplug any sensitive electronics or shut off the power bar.
  5. 5Before finalizing the purchase of a new home, have the electrical installation and grounding system inspected by a master electrician to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
