Have you heard of the net metering option?
Net metering is a special rate option involving a system of credits. It's for customers who, while remaining on the Hydro-Québec grid, want to generate their own electricity for consumption (maximum generating capacity of 50 kW).
To be eligible for net metering, you must generate electricity from renewable energy such as wind, solar, hydropower or bioenergy.
By offering net metering to its customers, Hydro-Québec :
- supports self-generation
- demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development
- promotes the responsible use of today's natural resources
- helps protect the quality of life of future generations
An attractive option
With net metering, customergenerators enjoy some autonomy in their electricity supply while remaining connected to a reliable system able to meet their power needs at all times, and into which they can feed their surplus kilowatthours.
And because they get credits for these surpluses, their hydro bill is reduced.

Two concrete examples
Habitat 07 house
The Habitat 07 house, located in Baie-Saint-Paul, was the first building to which the net metering option applied. It was built according to innovative ecological principles and uses solar and wind power to generate part of its electricity supply.
Groupe Boies 2000
Groupe Boies 2000, which specializes in the construction of high-efficiency houses, has chosen net metering for a model home in Otterburn Park. The home's innovative solar roof meets a significant portion of its energy needs.
