Le projet de l'Eastmain-1-A-Sarcelle-Rupert se caractérise par l'ampleur des mesures intégrées à sa conception, destinées à préserver l'environnement.
Le barrage de la Nemiscau-1 assure la fermeture du bief aval, dans le bras nord de la rivière Nemiscau.

Rupert dam-the project's main dam-is located 314 km from the mouth of the Rupert River and will divert part of the flow from the Rupert River northward.
The Lemare dam closes the forebay in the Lemare River valley.
The function of the transfer tunnel is to carry the river's diverted flow from the Rupert forebay into the Rupert tailbay. It is designed to handle a flow of 800 m3/s at a velocity of about 3.3 m/s.
Nemiscau-1 dam closes the tailbay in the north branch of the Nemiscau River.
The Nemiscau-2 dam closes the tailbay in the south branch of the Nemiscau River.
Eastmain-1-A powerhouse is being built at the northern end of Eastmain 1 reservoir, next to the existing Eastmain-1 powerhouse. The turbines at both facilities will be driven by the flow from the upper Eastmain River, combined with the diverted flow from the Rupert River.
Sarcelle powerhouse will be constructed at the northern end of Opinaca reservoir, next to the existing Sarcelle control structure. It is a surface powerhouse with a typical run-of-river configuration.
