Comparing Energy Options Using Life-Cycle Assessments

For some years now, Hydro-Québec has been monitoring the environmental performance of different energy options. It compiles data from international sources and Hydro-Québec research projects tracking the life cycle of various options. This wealth of information makes it possible to evaluate the full impact of each energy system, including the construction of generating facilities, fuel extraction, processing and transportation of raw materials, emissions from generating facilities, etc.

Continuous monitoring provides the basis for strategic environmental assessments designed to meet the following objectives:

• Provide reliable information that is relevant to Hydro-Québec's strategic planning
• Compare the various energy systems and options using life-cycle assessment
• Document options that are likely to affect electricity consumption, including heating
• Perform data gathering on new energy options that may have an impact on Hydro-Québec policies and orientations, particularly regarding the use of electricity in transportation
• Conduct life-cycle studies for particular options in which Hydro-Québec is directly involved
• Disseminate the results of option comparisons
