In 2002, the main producers of nuclear waste in Canada founded the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), of which Hydro-Québec is a member. The organization's mission is as follows:
analyze methods for managing waste
consult specialists and the general public
develop a safe solution that is morally and socially acceptable, as well as ecologically responsible
propose a solution to the federal authorities
