Providing a Stimulating and Respectful Work Environment

Ensuring Employee Health and Safety

The health and safety of our employees are a priority for Hydro-Québec. Major efforts are made every year to limit accidents as much as possible.

Each year since 2000, proportionately fewer accidents have occurred that require medical assistance or result in lost time. The Canadian electricity industry as a whole has seen a similar trend.

Unfortunately, we are not immune to contemporary workplace phenomena or to the increase in mental health problems. To improve job attendance, we must identify the areas requiring action, analyze the factors that affect attendance and performance and, finally, determine what measures should be taken.

Some Examples

Occupational Accidents

Every year, we endeavor to prevent accidents. Here are examples of some measures:

  • employee training in work methods and occupational hazards
  • periodic meetings of about 140 joint occupational health and safety committees
  • individual or group protective measures and equipment selected with the participation of provincial health and safety committees

Employee Assistance Program

Hydro-Québec offers all its permanent, temporary or seasonal employees a confidential, professional, employee assistance program. The program is available at all times to help them find quick and effective solutions for difficulties they may be experiencing in their personal or professional lives. After a professional assessment of the problem is made, a short-term intervention or treatment plan is developed.
Graph: Frequency of All Accidents Combined

  • With approximately 1,542 new cases in 2007, the rate of use remained relatively stable: 6.68% in 2007 compared with 6.95% in 2006.
  • The average number of appointments per case was 3.52 (all reasons combined).

Hazardous Materials

We introduced a plan that will improve our knowledge and control of hazardous materials used in the workplace.
