Ensuring Public Health and Safety

Attending to Public Safety and Security at Our Facilities

To ensure that workers and the public are safe and our facilities secure, we have implemented a security plan involving the rollout of various tools and methods, at a cost of several million dollars. The plan includes regular facility checks to ensure compliance with the strictest safety and security standards.

To reduce the number of incidents, Hydro-Québec educates the public on how to use electricity safely. This program is intended for the general public, young people, specialized workers and emergency responders. Our Web page on power safety includes practical information and a Power Safety Quiz.

We also support research that will help us understand and control the potential risks associated with electricity.

Some Examples and Statistics

Security at Our Facilities

An emergency telephone line is available to our employees for reporting any event or irregularity concerning our facilities.
A program of daily inspections around the perimeter of strategic facilities was introduced in 2006.
Compliance audits are conducted annually to assess facility security and public safety.

Electricity-Related Accidents

Over the years, the number of deaths by electrocution has gradually decreased. From 24 in 1990, it fell to 6 in 1995 and has continued to gradually decline.
Deaths by electrocution mainly involve work by trades workers on customers' premises.
Non-fatal accidents primarily occur during tree pruning or involve accidental vehicle contact (bucket trucks, boom trucks, etc.) with live conductors.

Wide circulation of awareness programs for elementary-school children.
Section on electric and magnetic fields and power safety on the corporate Web site.
Participation in a task force with Québec's occupational health and safety board (CSST) on tree pruning and delivery of construction material; most accidents occur during these activities.
Training for firefighters and information for medical personnel.
Emergency physicians receive support for treating electrical injuries.

Supporting Health and Safety Research

Ongoing commitment to various organizations and associations, including Québec's occupational health and safety board (CSST) and Health Canada.
Sponsorship of a research chair on toxicological risk assessment for human health at the Université de Montréal and an occupational health and safety management chair at Université Laval.
