The technical characteristics of the Hydro-Québec vibration damper ensure long-term control of eolian vibrations. Its innovative design:
- eliminates the messenger wire found in conventional Stockbridge dampers, making the unit more robust under severe weather conditions (ice storms, frost, strong winds) and improving corrosion resistance;
- increases damper service life, both reducing maintenance costs and providing better protection for conductors, overhead ground wires, OPGWs and fastening systems.

The icing-rate meter (IRM) is an instrument that detects and measures the icing potential of the air in contact with a probe. It is a very versatile device that can measure all types of atmospheric icing, whether caused by the passage of cold clouds or by freezing precipitation such as freezing rain or wet snow.
When the IRM is installed near a transmission line, it provides valuable real-time data on icing rates and the total accumulated weight on a specific line component. The operator can then assess the risks of insulator flashovers, galloping conductors and overloads.
Managed by Sygivre, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie's icing-rate meters can track all icing events capable of affecting strategic lines in the system. From the very start of an event, they provide data on real icing conditions in the atmosphere, supplementing weather forecasts with information on intensity and scope, thereby giving the operator time to reduce potential impacts.
