Products for Transmission Lines

The electro-expulsive cable de-icing system uses a unique technology that provides reliable performance and easy automation while consuming little energy. Using electromagnetic impulses, it requires about 100 times less power than conventional thermal methods. Hydro-Québec's solution provides effective protection for conductors, ground wires and OPGWs, as well as guy wires and cable stays, thus allowing lighter support structure designs.

The technical characteristics of the Hydro-Québec vibration damper ensure long-term control of eolian vibrations. Its innovative design:
  • eliminates the messenger wire found in conventional Stockbridge dampers, making the unit more robust under severe weather conditions (ice storms, frost, strong winds) and improving corrosion resistance;
  • increases damper service life, both reducing maintenance costs and providing better protection for conductors, overhead ground wires, OPGWs and fastening systems.

The Hydro-Québec spacer-damper ensures vibration control and endurance superior to that of other spacers available on the market. Its strong all-round performance, especially under heavy ice load conditions, provides effective long-term protection against clamp loosening and conductor wear.

The icing-rate meter (IRM) is an instrument that detects and measures the icing potential of the air in contact with a probe. It is a very versatile device that can measure all types of atmospheric icing, whether caused by the passage of cold clouds or by freezing precipitation such as freezing rain or wet snow.

When the IRM is installed near a transmission line, it provides valuable real-time data on icing rates and the total accumulated weight on a specific line component. The operator can then assess the risks of insulator flashovers, galloping conductors and overloads.

Managed by Sygivre, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie's icing-rate meters can track all icing events capable of affecting strategic lines in the system. From the very start of an event, they provide data on real icing conditions in the atmosphere, supplementing weather forecasts with information on intensity and scope, thereby giving the operator time to reduce potential impacts.

  Pavica Open/Close

With its unique design, Pavica is one of the most versatile and powerful vibration recorder-analyzers available. This compact, lightweight instrument measures the frequencies and amplitudes of all vibration cycles and stores the data. The results provide an estimate of the life expectancy of conductors, ground wires and OPGWs according to CIGRE and IEEE recommendations, and fatigue durability as per the EPRI method.

Roctest Ltée

The Hydro-Québec aerial warning marker provides power line owners and operators with a safe, effective and long-term solution. It is mounted using spiral armor rods that are slip-proof and without risk of damaging conductors at the point of attachment.

  Sygivre Open/Close

Sygivre is a real-time ice storm management system. Sygivre detects ice storms, tracks their development and keeps potential users informed. Data is collected through icing-rate meters and thermal probes at measurement sites.

Icing alerts are sent to users and monitoring data is posted on an Internet site.
