Vibroacoustic analysis is an innovative technique for detecting problems in transformers equipped with tap changers, which must be checked to avoid a variety of complications. Vibroacoustic analysis can be used to

  • check a tap changer without removing it from service;
  • detect a wide range of problems;
  • produce a clear diagnosis.

This type of analysis can be used to detect problems related to

  • Braking
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical contact
  • Synchronism
  • Alignment
  • Electric arc

Technical audits offer customers a detailed assessment of the condition of their electrical installations. The 21-point evaluation, covering technical, maintenance management and safety aspects, is conducted by an expert from Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie, who prepares a report that includes comments, an action plan and short- and medium-term improvement options. The annual follow-up process is optional.

Oragelect is a real-time lightning detection and localization system. Oragelect can be used in both a preventive and a corrective way on transmission, distribution and telecommunications networks. Thanks to the real-time detection of lightning strikes, it's easy to follow the development of a thunderstorm, to foresee its impacts on the system and to take the appropriate action.

Oragelect data is also used for post-mortem event analysis and the budgeting of new equipment. The territory covered by the Oragelect system used by Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie is broad and includes Québec, the Maritime provinces, New England and Eastern Ontario.

Live-line work consists of a series of operations allowing the installation or replacement of various pieces of electrical equipment without switching the power off. The objective is to reduce the number of service interruptions and maximize system operation and economic return, while improving the quality of customer service. These techniques can be customized to suit any power system, large or small.

Each project is tailored to the customer's specific requirements. Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie guarantees complete and efficient technology transfer so that customers will then be able to perform their own live-line work.

Methods and Courses
Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie has been sharing its know-how in live-line procedures with Canadian and foreign companies for over 50 years. This form of training provides a quick return on investment because it increases the stability of high- and medium-voltage systems, while maximizing customer satisfaction. Our experts teach various safe and effective live-line operations techniques through an extensive training program based on proven procedures.

Deteriorating insulating oil in power transformers and shunt reactors can shorten equipment life and lead to expensive production shutdowns.

To prevent such problems and help independent power system operators achieve cost-effective preventive maintenance of on-load equipment, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie provides environment-friendly, leading-edge expertise in the treatment of insulating oil, which has proven effective in Hydro-Québec's own transformer substations.

  • On-site sampling at customer premises (with option of measuring power factors and dielectric strength).
  • Complete laboratory analysis. Laboratory results augment the data from on-site analyses and confirm the quality of the treatment performed.
  • Problem identification (diagnostic) and recommendation of possible corrective measures.
  • On-site treatment of insulating oil for power transformers and shunt reactors.

Using our series resonant field test set or a Hipotronics source, we can verify the dielectric behavior of insulated high-voltage cables, SF6-insulated shielded substations and any other capacitive device.

The series resonant dielectric test system is essentially composed of the adjustable coil of a high-voltage reactor connected in series to a capacitive load. By varying the gap in the reactor core, the reactor inductance can be adjusted to tune the capacitive load to resonance.
