Electrical system upgrade in Estrie

A reliable system and a sustainable future

A more reliable system for a sustainable future

To meet today’s standards, Hydro-Québec must build a robust system made up of higher voltage lines, which will substantially increase transmission capacity.

Whether it’s to heat greenhouses to boost our food self-sufficiency or electrify transportation, the new system in Estrie will have the capacity to meet emerging needs for several decades.

A system aligned with future needs

Rather than scaling up maintenance efforts year after year, Hydro-Québec began converting the system in Estrie with the configurations necessary to keep up with changing needs.

A more robust system

The new substations and new lines will be equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and will be built to withstand extreme weather.

A more flexible system

The new system’s increased voltage and advanced connections will improve interconnectivity, by which loads are distributed between the various substations in the region. Redundant circuits will make it possible to supply all regional customers through different pathways should there be outages on the system.

A smarter system

The shift to a digital system will boost its responsiveness and facilitate communications between different substations. In addition to supporting real-time interventions, digitization will make it possible to integrate emerging technologies, such as self-generation and home energy storage or advanced consumption management services such as those proposed by Hilo.

Extensive facility upgrades

Many old facilities will need to be dismantled in order to upgrade the system, which will result in the reduction of the length of transmission lines by 65% and the elimination of half the substations in the region.
