Integration of Wind Power into the Grid

Through its expertise, Hydro-Québec intends to become a world benchmark in bringing wind power onto a large power system.

Given the fact that wind fluctuates according to local weather conditions, wind farm output is subject to considerable variation, albeit partly predictable, over time. This variability is added to the uncertainties of electricity demand, inflow variability and equipment outages that system operators must already deal with.

Integrating wind power into a large, primarily hydroelectric generating fleet presents a real challenge. Hydro-Québec is therefore developing cutting-edge expertise in order to:

  • Plan the integration of wind farms into its grid
  • Forecast fluctuating wind power output
  • Maintain safe, reliable operation of the power system

Consequently, Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie will have to do a great deal of work on the transmission system to ensure safe, reliable transmission of electricity supplied by the various wind farms in Québec.
