What exactly is the net metering option?

With our net metering option, you can feed any surplus power you generate into the Hydro-Quebec grid. When your facilities supply electricity to the Hydro-Québec grid, a credit is applied to reduce the balance of your electricity bill.

And when your electricity needs exceed your generating capacity, you can count on a reliable, continuous supply from the Hydro-Québec power grid to fill the gap.

You will regularly receive a bill with a statement of your consumption in kWh. The statement will give a detailed breakdown of the electricity you have consumed and the surplus you have fed into the Hydro-Québec grid.

Example
Billing period 1
Kilowatthours consumed from the Hydro-Québec grid 1 300 kWh
Kilowatthours you supplied to the Hydro-Québec grid - 300 kWh
Kilowatthours billed 1 000 kWh
Billing period 2
Kilowatthours consumed from the Hydro-Québec grid 800 kWh
Kilowatthours you supplied to the Hydro-Québec grid - 1 000 kWh
Kilowatthours billed 0 kWh
Kilowatthours credited, applied to the balance of a later bill* - 200 kWh
*Note that credits accumulated must be used within 24 months from the date of your enrolment in the net metering option; otherwise they are lost. Your surplus bank returns to zero every 24 months from this date. In other words, the net metering option does not allow a customer-generator to systematically generate surplus electricity.
