Title: Land clearing, cleaning, and reconfiguration

  Highlights

Clearing land in the MU-1 area
Duration of the work
2003-2008

Summer 2004
Planting of 137,965 green alders and 208,957 jack pines. The area planted represents 62 ha, mainly along the right-of-way of the Nemiscau–Eastmain road and in some sandpits.

1,480 ha were cleared in 2004 and 2,500 ha should be cleared in 2005.

2003

Clearing of more than 1,500 ha of land in the portion of the reservoir visible from the road system and main structures (dam and powerhouse).

Work area: Main structures / Eastmain 1 reservoir / Borrow pits (sandpits or quarries)
Clearing

We will clear about 5,000 ha of land in the vicinity of the main structures and around the Eastmain 1 reservoir.

Reservoir clearing at site CN-7 - bridging streams and piling brush

Land clearing will create an easy to use and safe body of water in the area of the main structures. It will also improve the appearance of the site around the main structures and reduce debris accumulation.

Cleaning
We will clean the reservoir (about 150 ha). We will recover and burn between 20,000 and 35,000 m3 of floating wood debris.
Dead wood and cut wood left behind after the work will need to be cleaned up.
Developing
Around the main structures, we will develop:
- a reception area;
- an interpretation circuit including a pathway, scenic lookouts, and  interpretation panels;
- planted areas around permanent and temporary structures.

Visitors will be able to observe the main structures and their setting, under safe conditions.

Enhancing the central square at the workcamp

We will plant about 2,460,000 shrub seedlings over 800 ha, including over 170 ha along roads.
We will plant herbaceous and graminaceous plants over 90 ha, mainly along roads.
We will grade roughly 100 ha near the main structures.

Hydroseeding

Results of hydroseeding

These measures will mitigate impacts on the landscape and natural environment, while improving wildlife potential.
This measure will make it possible to diversify the vegetation and provide a favorable habitat for animals. It was very successful at the La Grande complex.
