There are two possible situations where Hydro-Québec might prune or fell near medium-voltage lines at your request:

  • You notify Hydro-Québec of vegetation posing a danger.
  • You wish to improve your property (putting in a pool or garden shed, for instance), which requires a tree to be pruned or felled near medium-voltage lines.

In both cases, you must contact Hydro-Québec. A Hydro-Québec expert will look into your request and evaluate the electrical hazard.

You notify Hydro-Québec of vegetation posing a danger

If the expert assessing your request determines that action is required to maintain electricity service safety and reliability, Hydro-Québec or an arborist hired by the company will carry out any hazardous work at no charge. Owners may decide whether to finish the job (pick up branches, cut wood and dispose of waste) themselves or hire an arborist. Tree owners are responsible for this part of the work.

You wish to improve your property (putting in a pool or garden shed, for instance), which requires a tree to be pruned or felled near medium-voltage lines

In this case, only the owner of the tree can contact Hydro-Québec. If the company's expert considers there to be an electrical hazard, an arboriculture contract describing the work to be done and its cost will be prepared for you.

Charges for tree pruning or felling can vary significantly (from $35 to $2,300), depending on the size and diameter of the tree as well as its location.

Owners may decide whether to finish the job (pick up branches, cut wood and dispose of waste) themselves or to hire an arborist.

To sum up: If the work is done at an owner’s request, the cost of hazardous work must be borne by the owner. In the case of trees owned by government agencies, municipal and community organizations, health centres, hospitals and schools, or if the work is done to maintain power system safety, Hydro-Québec will pay the costs.

Reminder: By law, only Hydro-Québec or a professional tree trimmer authorized by Hydro-Québec is allowed to perform work that might require a person, part of a tree or a tool to come within three metres of a medium-voltage line at any time.
