Kruger makes its processes more energy-efficient

Image : Kruger
Kruger got involved in energy efficiency projects under Hydro-Québec's Industrial Initiatives Program – Major Customers. By replacing inefficient power-hungry equipment at its Bromont mill, the firm cut energy requirements by 50%, saving roughly 7 GWh per year for all the projects combined.

Project 1: Replacement of primary centrifugal cleaners in approach systems

The mill's centrifugal cleaners required very high pressure differentials to operate properly, which resulted in pressure drops of 345 kPa. To compensate, a primary mixture pump was used to supply the cleaners. The greater the pressure differential, the more pumping power required and, consequently, the greater the energy expenditure.

Cleaners with a smaller diameter were installed, resulting in a reduction in pressure drops of about 160 kPa. The result is reduced energy consumption by the pumping system that supplies the three paper machines.

Project 2: Replacement of level control valves on high-consistency pulpers

A VFD was installed on the pumps so that the pumps, rather than the control valves, maintain pulper levels, thus reducing the pumping power required.
