ENERGY STAR® Appliances
Energy Consumption
The EnerGuide label
By law, the EnerGuide label must be affixed to all new appliances manufactured in or imported into Canada. It is not a seal of energy efficiency, but rather a tool to help you compare the energy consumption of similar appliances.
The label provides the answers to two important questions:
- How much energy, in kilowatthours (kWh), will the appliance use in one year?
- Does the appliance use more or less power than other, comparable models?
- Estimated annual energy consumption, in kilowatthours
per year.
- An arrow just above the shaded bar scale shows where the appliance ranks relative to models of the same type and size.
- The shaded bar scale shows the energy-consumption range for appliances of similar type and size. The figure at the left end of the scale indicates the lowest energy consumption, while the figure on the right indicates the highest.

Beware of energy hogs
Operating costs are costs that consumers have to pay over the entire service life of an appliance.
The more efficient an appliance is, the less power it uses.
