Change to Rate DM

Pursuant to Régie de l'énergie decision D-2008-003, since April 1, 2008, Hydro-Québec has no longer offered Rate DM to customers wishing to obtain a new service contract.

Customers who already have a service contract at Rate DM will continue to pay that rate.

See Frequently asked questions

Subtitle: Rate DM

Rate DM applies to apartment blocks or other multiple-unit buildings where residences do not have separate meters and where bulk metering is used.

Subtitle: Rate structure

Rate DM consists of a fixed charge plus two levels of pricing for energy consumption. The structure of Rate DM is as follows:

Fixed charge (per day)
Fixed charge per day, times the multiplier 40.64¢
Price of energy (¢/kWh)
First 30 kWh per day, times the multiplier 5.40¢
Remaining energy consumption 7.33¢
Price of power ($/kW)
Exceeding 50 kW in the winter period (December 1 to March 31) $1.53

Rates effective April 1, 2008.
Under no circumstances may this table be used to replace the Distribution Tariff.

The prices indicated for energy may be reduced by a discount for electricity supplied at medium or high voltage.

Subtitle: What is the multiplier?

Unlike Rate D, Rate DM has a multiplier that applies to the fixed charge and helps determine consumption at the various energy prices. The amount of the multiplier depends on the type of dwelling:

  • 1 multiplier for each dwelling in an apartment building or community residence;
  • 1 multiplier for the first 9 rooms in a community residence;
  • 1 multiplier for each additional room in a community residence.
Subtitle: Credit for supply for domestic rates

Rate DM, like Hydro-Québec's other rates, assumes that electricity will be supplied at low voltage. When the customer uses electricity supplied at a nominal voltage between phases equal to 5kV but less than 50 kV or invests to transform it, then Hydro-Québec no longer has to pay transformation costs. In return, the utility grants a discount of 0.222 ¢/kWh on the price of energy billed.
