Geothermal Systems

What's geothermal energy?

It's a clean, renewable energy source that will heat and cool your house all year long. It can mean heating costs up to 60% lower than for electric baseboard heating! If you're looking for year-round savings and comfort, think about a geothermal system.

How does it work?

The system consists of an underground loop connected to a distribution system and activated by a heat pump.

  • In summer, for air-conditioning, the heat pump extracts heat from the warm air in the house, transfers it into the ground and returns cool air to the house.
  • In winter, it extracts heat stored in the ground and transfers it to the house.

It's a reliable and long-lasting system, because the main components are protected from the elements.

How much does it cost?

A number of factors affect the cost, but for a typical house, you can expect to pay between $20,000 and $40,000. Before you decide, be sure to compare the costs, requirements and benefits of this sustainable heating and cooling system.

Get a grant!

When you have a Canadian GeoExchange Coalition-accredited contractor install your geothermal system, you can apply for a grant from Hydro-Québec. Some other conditions also apply.
