Tips and advice form Mr. Socket: Safety at home

Need to use a ladder to do some work near power lines? Be extremely careful, especially if your ladder is aluminum, because it’s a highly conductive metal.

Each year, many people have accidents involving electricity due to careless use of a metal ladder. If you have the least doubt about how safe it is to do a job, call in a professional.

Safety measures

Listen to Mr. Socket:

  • First locate power lines.
  • Climb up onto your roof on the side opposite the service mast.
  • Keep your ladder, long-handled tools and metal materials (eavestroughs, pipes, aluminum siding) far away from power lines.
  • Place your ladder feet firmly and solidly on the ground so the top part doesn’t slip.
  • Wear shoes with sturdy soles for stability.
