Overseeing Our Environmental Initiatives

Implementing Environmental Management Systems

We first adopt a policy that incorporates environmental protection into all the company's operations. Next, we act—in other words, plan our initiatives, carry them out, measure our progress and constantly make improvements. That is what environmental management is all about.

In 1997, Hydro-Québec made a commitment to implement ISO 14001–compliant environmental management systems (EMS) in all units whose activities include significant environmental aspects. This standard therefore forms the basis of our environmental management approach.

Information on the main stages in our EMS approach.

With EMS implementation, we reviewed our environmental policy and established declarations of environmental principles. Our commitment to environmental management is summed up in the COP principle, which means:
  • Compliance with laws and regulations
  • Ongoing environmental improvement
  • Pollution prevention

Some Examples and Statistics

Our ISO 14001 environmental management systems (EMS) now cover over 18,000 employees whose work includes significant environmental aspects. The company's main areas of operation that are covered by an EMS are:
  • Generation
  • Transmission
  • Distribution
  • Construction
  • Acquisition of goods and services and material management
  • Research and development
  • Telecommunications
Recent organizational adjustments in 2006 and 2007 have led to the deployment of new EMSs that had not been certified by the end of 2007. This explains the decrease in 2006 compared to 2005.
