Taking Effective Action to Mitigate Contamination

Responding Rapidly in the Event of Accidental Spills

To carry out its operations, Hydro-Québec uses equipment, such as transformers, that is insulated and cooled with oil. In the event of an equipment failure or breakage due to weather-related events, accidental contaminant spills can occur. In such cases, we take the necessary measures to control the spill, contain the spilled product and recover it as quickly as possible.

In the event of a contaminant spill, Hydro-Québec takes steps to limit the size of the area affected and related environmental consequences.

We intervene and notify the proper authorities as quickly as possible. In Québec, we must inform the authorities as soon as a spill with an environmental impact occurs. Moreover, we have an alarm system for reporting environmental emergencies, including accidental spills related to our equipment. All our facilities and worksites also have emergency response plans, which are periodically updated and tested.

Some Statistics

The number of spills has increased in recent years. This situation can largely be explained by the fact that since 2000, environmental management systems have been introduced that have improved our follow-up and recording methods for spills, and spills are now inventoried more systematically.

Statistics on Accidental Spills (%)
2004 2005 2006 2007
Percentage of spills that were responded to or reported within less than 12 hours 76 69 74 75
Percentage of spills involving less than 100 litres 93 89 89 91
Percentage due to equipment breakage 68 67 55 54
