Using Resources Wisely

Drinking Water

Hydro-Québec uses large quantities of drinking water to operate its facilities and meet employee needs.

For some time now, we have been replacing pieces of equipment that use drinking water with ones that are more environmentally friendly. Various projects are under way to reduce water consumption and improve water quality.

Some Examples

To promote better use of water in our administrative buildings, equipment that consumes large amounts of drinking water will be replaced by 2009. This will mean theoretical annual savings of about 123 million litres of water because of work done in 2007.
Laboratory instrument cooling systems at our research institute in Varennes were modified to operate in a closed loop. Water will circulate continuously in the systems without any additional intake of drinking water, saving over 56 million litres of water per year.
We use high-pressure equipment for vehicle washing and have reduced wash frequency. Our suppliers are informed of the pertinent contractual requirements.
