Using Resources Wisely
Equipment and Materials Used |
Hydro-Québec uses large quantities of equipment and materials in connection with its activities, both to build and operate its facilities and to serve its customers.
In conjunction with the Québec Residual Materials Management Policy 1998–2008, we developed a work plan in 2003 for the reduction at source, reuse, recycling, reclamation and, as a last resort, disposal (4R-D program) of residual materials produced in administrative buildings.
We are also represented on residual materials committees and working groups in cooperation with the Business Council on the Environment (CPEQ) and the RÉSEAU environnement.

Some Examples and Statistics |

| |
Our customers help us reduce at source: every year, hundreds of thousands of mailings are avoided thanks to Online Billing. |
We set up some 300 recycling stations for glass, plastic and metal food containers in 86 of our buildings. Nearly 19,000 employees now have access to this recycling service. |
A system of refillable aerosol spray cans was introduced for brake cleaning products at all of our vehicle repair shops, and for chain lubricant at some of our shops, avoiding the annual disposal of over 22,500 cans, which are a form of residual hazardous material. |
We replaced Styrofoam coffee cups with cardboard cups at our cafeterias on the Island of Montréal and at some others in the Québec City area. The cardboard in these cups breaks down in 5 years, compared with 200 years for the Styrofoam. |
We compost green waste generated by property maintenance at our procurement and service centres in Saint-Hyacinthe and Saint-Bruno. The compost will be used to fertilize our flower beds starting in 2008. |
In December 2006, we started using Enviro 100-brand paper, which is made from 100% postconsumer recycled fibre, FSC-certified, bleached without chlorine. |
