Hydro-Québec's power system is made up of a wide array of electrical equipment—all part of a network that connects our generating stations to our customers. Power system operations are dependent on the reliability and performance of this equipment. Because it is subjected to extremely harsh climatic and environmental conditions such as lightning, ice storms and pollution, as well as to stresses such as electromagnetic disturbances, overheating and overvoltage, the equipment's operation involves a host of parameters which must be accurately known and properly controlled. It is also important to be able to assess the condition of equipment that is crucial to system operation and to detect any anomalies.

Hydro-Québec's research institute has great experience in conducting R&D projects, and electrical equipment understandably plays an important role in our research projects. Our specialists' work consists of standardization combined with the study and characterization of electrical constraints associated with generating station equipment, disconnectors, transformers and protective relays. Projects also deal with electromagnetic compatibility and analysis of the electrical properties of overhead lines and underground cables, in addition to performance tests and assessing the residual life of equipment.

The analysis and modeling of various aspects and parameters related to electrical equipment and its operation are also part of our research program. Our scientific and technical staff is also working on developing diagnostic tools designed to monitor generators, substation equipment, and overhead and underground power line facilities. The research institute's multidisciplinary expertise with respect to electrical equipment also contributes to projects aimed at developing innovative technologies with industrial partners.
