“Believe in your dreams. Go for it!”

Nathalie Claveau firmly believes that, in the years to come, the Indigenous workforce will just keep getting bigger at companies like Hydro-Québec. That's why you'll often hear her encouraging her kids and their friends to develop their potential.

Forging bonds of friendship

When Lorianne Trapper first applied to Hydro-Québec, she wondered what it would be like to work with non-Indigenous people. But the moment she was welcomed on board by Steve Fraser, her team leader, her apprehensions dissolved.

Steve has a great sense of humour. He’s always playing jokes on his co-workers. And laughter is such an important part of Indigenous culture. Not only did I feel right at home and part of the team, but I also made a new friend.” Steve, of course, doesn’t miss a beat: “That’s what she thinks!”

Internship program

In summer 2022, seven Indigenous university students were hired as interns. Hailing from different programs—forest management and environment, business administration, civil, physical, geological and chemical engineering—they worked at Hydro-Québec for an average of 15 weeks before returning to school. Below are some of their impressions.

A warm welcome

My peers gave me a warm welcome. I was never afraid to ask questions or join the discussion! Through my internship, I also became interested in developing renewable energies.

Sara-Jane Hunt, a Mi'kmaq from Gespeg and chemical engineering student

Clean energy

I opted to be an intern at Hydro-Québec because it's a great company, not to mention a world leader in clean energy generation! My internship has certainly been one of the more enriching experiences of my life to date.

Cyril Ste-Marie, a Huron from Wendake and forest management and environment student

Willingness to listen

Nituhta means ‘to listen’ in Nehlueun, and it perfectly sums up what Hydro-Québec’s employees did when I arrived. The company’s strength is in its diversity, inclusion and engagement, and its staff are welcoming and inspiring.
