Wind farm development

From selecting a location to operating the wind farm, learn more about the steps involved in developing a wind farm in collaboration with the communities and other land users.

First step: assess the wind power potential

Wind is variable, even within a region. Its strength, direction and regularity vary depending on location and terrain.

By assessing the wind power potential, we can then identify the most suitable areas. In some cases, the assessment includes installing temporary wind measurement towers to gather on‑site data.

Before considering the development of a wind power project, several aspects must be studied, including:

  • Environmental impacts
  • Technical and economic aspects
  • Social acceptability.

The installation of a wind measurement tower is not confirmation of a wind power project

The wind measurement step is part of a much more extensive analysis process. Therefore, if a wind measurement tower is installed on a given site, it does not mean that a wind farm will be built there.

Why build wind farms?

In Québec, we made the clear decision to generate more renewable energy in order to meet future electricity needs while supporting the energy transition.

From wind power potential to the jobsite

Once the wind power potential has been confirmed, various activities are initiated to determine the project’s viability. This includes an environmental impact assessment, technical and economic studies and consultations with the host community.

Once the results of those steps are considered favourable and the necessary approvals have been granted, the project can progress to the construction phase. This phase includes developing the site, building the access roads, installing electrical equipment and assembling the wind turbines for commissioning.

Stages of a wind farm project

This video explains the key steps in the development of a wind farm—from planning to commissioning. You’ll discover how we determine suitable areas, carry out consultations, perform environmental studies and obtain the necessary authorizations in collaboration with local communities and First Nations. The video also explains the construction, maintenance and dismantling of wind farms while respecting the local communities and the environment.
