Project News Work on the island of Montréal and in Laval
Here is the list of projects underway on the island of Montréal and in Laval. Carried out by Hydro‑Québec and its suppliers, the work may affect traffic and access to homes, businesses and parking areas. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Ongoing work
This list is not exhaustive. Emergency work may be carried out without notice.
Montréal Power system upgrade in Ville‑Marie – Saturday, November 7
Hydro‑Québec must carry out urgent work on the power system on Saturday, November 7, in the eastern part of the Ville‑Marie borough in order to upgrade the distribution system from 12 to 25 kV.
The purpose of the work is to increase the grid’s voltage in the area, which will boost the grid’s capacity and enhance the reliability of the electricity supply.
As we approach the winter peak period, this work is essential to modernize our facilities, ensure the safe operation of the power system and provide a more reliable service in the long term.
The work will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2026. A service interruption is planned from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Affected area:
- Area 1: Fullum / Larivière intersection
- Area 2: De Lorimier / Logan intersection
- Area 3: Papineau / Viger intersection
- Area 4: Area bounded by Berri, Saint‑Antoine, Panet and Notre‑Dame East
The planned service interruption will affect residential and business customers in the area from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., as well as certain traffic lights.
To complete this major work in a single day, Hydro‑Québec will deploy 70 workers. Their presence and that of their vehicles may cause traffic disruptions on certain streets.
Hydro‑Québec’s work will also coincide with work by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD) that requires the complete closure of access points via Rue Notre‑Dame Est and Boulevard Robert‑Bourassa to the Ville‑Marie Expressway (A‑136); a detour via Rue Saint‑Antoine will be set up. As this is a very busy area, significant traffic delays are expected. Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly.
Hydro‑Québec thanks the public and road users in advance for their understanding and cooperation.
To minimize the impact of the work, Hydro‑Québec will implement the following measures:
- Planned detours coordinated with the Ville‑Marie borough and the MTMD
- Measures to ensures the proper operation of affected traffic lights or, if necessary, a police presence at the affected intersections
- Direct notifications to all residential and business customers affected by the service interruption
- Fully mobilized crews to optimize every stage of the work and restore service as quickly as possible
Montréal Deconstruction of the building located at 7401, boulevard Métropolitain Est
Hydro‑Québec must deconstruct the building located at 7401, boulevard Métropolitain Est, near Langelier substation. The work aims to secure the site and prepare it to be used in the future to meet the long‑term needs of the power grid.
Aware of the heritage value attached to the building, Hydro‑Québec conducted numerous studies and took several steps in recent years to assess whether it could be preserved and reused. Further to these studies, Hydro‑Québec chose to deconstruct the building.
The work will be carried out in a way that minimizes impacts on neighbours. Special attention will also be paid to recovering and repurposing materials whenever possible.
The work will primarily include securing the site, dismantling the building, sorting and recovering materials and restoring the grounds.
Work will begin the week of October 26, 2026, on Hydro‑Québec property located at 7401, boulevard Métropolitain Est, near Langelier substation in the borough of Anjou.
Local residents and passersby may notice:
- machinery and trucks near the work site
- noise from deconstruction and dust during certain work phases
Hydro‑Québec will make every effort to minimize these nuisances and limit disruptions for residents.

Montréal Hochelaga substation and underground transmission line
Construction of underground electricity transmission lines between the Notre-Dame substation and the future Hochelaga substation in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
For more detailed information on the work schedule and the areas affected, we invite you to consult the Hochelaga Project web page:
The project includes the construction of a 315/25-kV substation, supplied by two 315-kV transmission lines (circuits 3212 and 3213) connecting the future substation to Notre-Dame substation. The underground lines will each extend approximately 5 km.
These new facilities will help improve system reliability and increase capacity to meet growing needs in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
Work will be carried out in successive phases, including preparation, excavation, installation, and repair, among others. Under the plan, disruptions and inconveniences should be kept to a minimum.
Based on the borough and the phase of work underway, the following could be involved:
- an increased number of workers and machinery;
- temporary disruptions for traffic, pedestrians or cyclists;
- noise and dust during active worksite hours.
- clear signage, and signalers or police as required;
- maintained access to residences, businesses and essential services such as public transit (bus stops relocated if necessary);
- work scheduled mainly during weekdays.
MONTRÉAL AND WESTMOUNT Construction of the Atwater-Maisonneuve underground transmission line

Traffic restrictions will be in effect between Boulevard des Anciens‑Combattants and Poultry Cottages. These will include the removal of a service road and a reduction of the speed limit to 30 km/h.
The work will result in the closure of a service road and a reduction of the speed limit to 30 km/h to ensure the safety of the public and workers. Temporary lane closures, occasional traffic disruptions, dust, and temporary damage to the roadway or nearby infrastructures are also to be expected during the construction period.
Installation of appropriate signage and use of signallers, as needed, to ensure road safety and keep traffic moving smoothly.
Laval Major work to improve the quality of electricity service
Work is underway to improve service reliability in several sectors of Laval. We will continue to invest in the power system to provide our customers with reliable, high‑quality service.
Hydro‑Québec crews have inspected the distribution lines that supply these districts to collect data and identify potential issues, including those that could lead to outages. Based on the observations, some corrective measures have already been implemented and other maintenance work has been completed or is planned.
The work includes:

Montréal Power system upgrades in the Mont-Royal area
To improve the quality and reliability of the electricity service and ensure the long-term operability of its facilities in Mont-Royal, Hydro-Québec is carrying out major upgrades on the distribution network within the area bounded by rues Jean-Talon, de l'Acadie and chemins de la Côte-de-Liesse and Canora. Work will continue until fall 2027.
The work includes, in particular, replacement of electric conductors, transformers and around 300 poles that have reached the end of their useful life.
Work may also require vegetation control, for example tree pruning, and as required, felling trees, to clear power lines to enable work to be carried out safely and efficiently.
- Fall 2026 - Spring 2027 : Preliminary work
- Spring 2027 - Fall 2027 : Major work
The area in question mainly crosses through backyards in the properties in the area.
As work could cause some inconvenience, in particular related to access to property, noise and vegetation control work, Hydro-Québec would like to thank residents in advance for their cooperation.
To minimize the impacts, Hydro-Québec has planned the following measures:
- planning the work to limit the impact on access to homes;
- advance notice to residents regarding planned work and service interruptions.
