What to do in case of Downed or severed power line

A power line (cable or wire) that has fallen to the ground, has been severed or is hanging at head height is dangerous and potentially fatal, even if it is not moving or making any noise.

Before help arrives

  • Stay at least 10 metres away from the downed or severed power line.
  • Never touch the line, even if it appears de-energized.
  • Do not attempt to move the line, even with an object (wood, plastic, etc.).
  • Tell others not to approach.

If the situation worsens

  • Sparks or flames
  • Crackling sounds
  • Power line is moving

Do not intervene!

Stay at least 10 metres away and dial 911 if you haven’t done so already.

If someone is in danger

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Not breathing
  • Not responding

Begin CPR only if the 911 dispatcher confirms that it is safe to do so. Continue until emergency services arrive.

Downed power line after an accident?

A power line may have fallen as a result of a collision between a vehicle and a utility pole. Before taking any action, follow the safety instructions.
