Upstream: invisible eddies
The water upstream of a generating station may seem calm, but below the surface are powerful eddies that can drag you under. This is a very real drowning hazard.
Downstream: unpredictable churning
Downstream from a generating station, the water is agitated when the turbines are running. The water may seem calm when the turbines stop, but if they were to suddenly start up again, you wouldn’t be able to make it out of the churning waters.
