Smart meter replacement How to prepare for the visit from our crews
Starting in 2027, Hydro‑Québec will replace 4.4 million smart meters across Québec. This operation will be carried out over a seven‑year period.
Why does my meter need to be replaced?
The next‑generation smart meters installed since 2012 have an expected service life of 15 to 18 years.
After a certain period, the meters must be replaced to comply with Measurement Canada requirements.
The new meters will help ensure the long‑term reliability and sustainability of our advanced metering infrastructure while supporting service continuity.
Who will install my new meter?
Hydro‑Québec has mandated Bell to support its crews for appointment scheduling, installation, storage and equipment recycling.
The installer who visits your home may therefore be employed by either Hydro‑Québec or Bell.
How can I identify the Bell or Hydro‑Québec installer?
- The installer will show you their identification card.
- Their vehicle will display either the Bell or Hydro‑Québec logo.
How can I prepare for the visit?
-
Make sure that access to the meter is clear
and any pets are kept away. -
Be ready for a short service interruption.
It should last only a few minutes. -
Your presence:
- is not required if the meter is accessible from outside
- is required if the meter is indoors or in an inaccessible area
Note: The visit may last between 15 and 45 minutes.
