Smart thermostats A simple way to save money and energy
No more adjusting your thermostats manually. Welcome to the era of smart thermostats! Program them based on your lifestyle habits and use a mobile app to set the temperature in your home remotely. Greater comfort. Greater savings. It’s easy.
Smart thermostats give you more
Smart thermostats have many advantages over electronic models. They help you optimize your electricity use and maximize your savings—even during winter peaks .
In Québec, they usually occur on cold days, when everyone uses a lot of electricity at the same time, which puts a lot of pressure on the grid. Fortunately, winter peaks only represent 5% of winter, or just a few days a year from 6 to 9 a.m. and from 4 to 8 p.m.

You can modify those parameters up until a few hours before the challenge begins.
We recommend hiring a master electrician to install your thermostats. Under Québec’s Building Act, electrical equipment must be installed by a member of the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ).
To be covered by warranty, thermostat installation must comply with Chapter V, Electricity, of the Construction Code (load, conductor gauge, protective devices, etc.) and with the manufacturers’ technical specifications.
You can find a master electrician in the CMEQ membership directory (in French only).
You can sell them, donate them or take them to a recycling centre for electronic devices.
To find a drop-off site, refer to the Ça va où? (Where does it go?) mobile app.
How do you choose the right smart thermostat?
Given the many models available on the market, it’s easy to get confused. A good starting point is to determine whether your heating system operates in a high‑voltage or low-voltage setting.
The following information will help you decide based on the type of system you have. In all cases, we recommend hiring a master electrician to install the equipment.
In general, smart thermostats for electric baseboard heaters work in a high‑voltage setting, which means that a device needs to be installed in each room. The thermostats can be centrally managed and set remotely using a mobile app.
Does your home have a wall‑mounted heat pump?
The two systems—the heat pump and the baseboard heaters—do not communicate with one another (some exceptions apply). The settings of both systems must therefore be optimized to prevent them from operating at the same time, which would result in excessive electricity consumption. Here’s a tip: set your thermostats to two degrees lower than the temperature setting on your heat pump.
Do you have in‑floor heating?
Opt for a thermostat that’s compatible with your other smart devices to guarantee that all your heating sources are effectively managed.
With a central heating system, a low‑voltage thermostat is generally required. You’ll be able to set the temperature of each room from a single device.
If your baseboard heaters are used as auxiliary heaters, you can make it easier to manage your electricity use by choosing smart thermostats that are compatible with the same app as the one associated with your main system.
Good to know: Most smart thermostats for central heating systems and central heat pumps can manage both heating and air conditioning.
Although hot‑water heating systems are less common, certain smart thermostat models are compatible with this type of system. They can automate your preferred settings and improve your comfort when you use radiators to heat your home.
