Head office renovation: A project that will shape the heart of Montréal
Hydro‑Québec is renovating its head office – Édifice Jean‑Lesage – located in the heart of Montréal. This major project marks the beginning of a new chapter for this iconic building, which is deeply rooted in Québec’s collective identity.
This ambitious project aims to modernize and revitalize this symbolic building while also respecting its history.
Project overview
Designed from the perspective of sustainability, energy performance and evolving work environments, the renovated building will offer a functional environment and promote collaboration and innovation while meeting today’s standards and needs.
Once completed, Édifice Jean‑Lesage will symbolize Hydro‑Québec’s renewed commitment to the Montréal community, to highlighting its heritage and to Québec’s energy future.
Essential work
The electromechanical systems in Édifice Jean‑Lesage, which was inaugurated in 1962, have reached the end of their useful life and require an upgrade. The renovation project will primarily involve replacing the heating and air‑conditioning systems, the fire alarm system and the water supply system with new equipment that complies with current standards.
The building envelope was fully renovated in 2019. The current work will focus on the interior. The work is also an opportunity to improve the building’s energy efficiency and ensure its long‑term operability in the coming decades. According to the current schedule, the work will begin in 2026 and continue until 2029.

Heritage preservation and a sustainable approach
The project pays particular attention to highlighting heritage elements, such as the Mousseau mural, and preserving existing architectural elements.
Using an approach based on sustainable development, Hydro‑Québec will also focus on the recovery and enhancement of many of the building’s features. The furniture will be reused or remanufactured for other projects and many items, such as carpets and wiring, will be recycled, thereby reducing the renovation’s environmental footprint.
The Mousseau mural – A treasured example of Québec’s cultural heritage [in French only]
Created by artist Jean‑Paul Mousseau, Lumière et mouvement dans la couleur is a symbolic, kinetic work of art that has illuminated the lobby of Hydro‑Québec’s head office since its inauguration in 1962. The mural’s near‑infinite patterns are created by 1,280 metres of neon lights in eight different colors.

Highlights
A pioneer among Montréal skyscrapers
Built between 1959 and 1962, Édifice Jean‑Lesage became a symbol of the Quiet Revolution. It was the first skyscraper to be built in the eastern part of downtown, an area associated with French‑speaking Montrealers. The 110‑meter‑tall building, made up of 27 stories and 5 basement levels, was designed by architect Gaston Gagnier. His architecture draws inspiration from Montréal’s early skyscrapers – flush to the sidewalk, with a tiered silhouette – as well as from the international style associated with modern architecture, featuring a curtain wall and without ornamentation.
A recognized heritage sign
Hydro‑Québec’s famous illuminated orange symbol, located on the east and west sides of the tower, has been recognized as a sign of heritage interest by the Ville‑Marie borough. This rare distinction has only been awarded to a limited number of Montréal signs.
Did you know?
Until 2002, the building housed the Québec Premier’s Montréal office. In 2017, its official name became Édifice Jean‑Lesage in tribute to one of the major architects of the Quiet Revolution and the nationalization of electricity.
Location of the head office
Hydro‑Québec’s head office is centrally located in the heart of downtown Montréal – at 75, boulevard René‑Lévesque Ouest – where it is easily accessible given its proximity to major roads and the public transit system.
Integrated into the city’s arts district, an area that is steeped in history, the building reflects the company’s deep roots in Montréal and its role in the city’s development.
