Managing energy differently to save money

Located in the Cantons-de-l'Est, Bromont, montagne d’expériences is a large ski resort that is open day and night, making it popular with both ski and snowboard enthusiasts. Concerned about its electricity consumption and wishing to soundly manage this collective resource, the company opted to participate in the Demand Response (DR) Option and adjust its power demand during periods of extreme cold. With the support of our experts, it implemented measures through which it achieves significant savings while maintaining top-notch service.

Adjusting electricity consumption in peak periods

In Québec, we deal with temperatures that vary greatly over the course of a year and sometimes even during the same week. Ski resorts are not immune to this reality. They absorb significant electricity costs that skyrocket in times of extreme cold. Bromont, montagne d’expériences operates 11 ski lifts and has 141 trails, 101 of which are lit. In discussions with the Hydro-Québec team, the resort owners quickly realized that there were options available to them to reduce their electricity bill and contribute to a better management of our energy resources.

“It’s important for us to manage energy soundly and to do our part when it comes to peak demand management on Québec’s electric power system.”

— Charles Désourdy, President of Bromont, montagne d’expériences
Customer support – Hydro-Québec’s expertise

The DR option proposed by Hydro-Québec met the resort’s objectives. By taking part in the DR option, participating customers reduce their power demand during peak demand events in exchange for a credit at the end of winter. These efforts help to reduce electricity imports, which can be very costly. They also reduce the investments needed on our system to meet demand, which is highest during the winter peak period. The ski resort thus implemented a series of measures to scale back its activities during peak periods, including ceasing snow production and reducing the lit ski area, both of which require a lot of power.

Since it began participating in 2018, the resort has reduced its power demand on the system between 1,696 kW and 3,981 kW per peak demand event. These savings have resulted of $861,840 in compensation over four years for the resort.

A winning collaboration

To help Bromont, montagne d’expériences achieve its objectives, our technical experts clearly explained how Hydro-Québec calculates power consumption and what concrete measures can reduce it. The company was then able to establish an action plan through which it can reduce its power demand when we ask it to. We’re in touch with the resort on a regular basis during the winter to keep it informed of upcoming peak demand events. Peak demand event notices are based on several elements, including the weather throughout Québec and the availability of energy on import markets. In turn, the station uses various communication tools to keep its customers informed of the measures put in place, thus ensuring transparent operational management.

“Bromont, montagne d’expériences has always been very concerned about sound energy management and has shown great interest in rate design, energy efficiency and power management. The various projects it has implemented over the years demonstrate its responsible energy management. It’s always a pleasure to work with this customer.“

— Chantale Lessard, Commercial Delegate, Hydro-Québec
